Native Americans and African Americans communities play a fundamental role in crafting the diorama tradition, that will become predominant in the United States during the 20th century. Thus, this phenomena is more than a simple reappropriation of an already existing display. This use of diorama to write alternative narratives has a long history, starting around 1900. However, as I point out in this article, another tradition does exist, albeit completly ignored in the historiography: a tradition of activist dioramas tending to self representation in the United States, used by Native and African Americans in fairs, expositions, and museums. Since the article published by Donna Haraway in the mid-eighties, these taxidermic dioramas have even become the paradigm of many studies of dioramas in the field of natural sciences or anthropology. The dioramas of the American Museum of Natural History in New York are among the most famous in the United States.
